God's House in Our Time - An Informational Brochure
An ongoing progress log
April 20, 2008
~ Building God's House in Our Time ~ The Crucifixion, Nativity, and Ascension stained glass windows invoke wonder and awe as they radiate the power and peace of God's love. The liturgical painting adds a touch of heavenly splendor, that blesses us with its serenity. The marble and porcelain floors help us stand firm in the permanent commitment of Jesus for our salvation. The statues of the Sacred Heart, Blessed Mother and Child, St. Joseph and St. Anthony remind us that we are destined to be saints. Our stunning tabernacle calls us to make our Eucharistic Lord, the center of our hearts and homes. The Stations of the Cross, each incorporating a contemporary saint, invite us to partner with Jesus and the saints, as they assist us in our daily responsibilities and struggles. The chandeliers welcome us into the Light of Christ so that we can be candles of hope to others.
With the reuse of our original church altars, tabernacle, statues, and windows, our chapel is a replica of our former church where many have received countless blessings since 1970. The Bolton Morris stained glass windows dramatize the history of salvation from Adam and Eve to the Last Judgment. Here we will celebrate daily mass, as well as continue a Perpetual Adoration from Sunday afternoon until Saturday morning. The parish offices, conference rooms and hall remind us that, as both a stewardship parish and a family of faith, we must be ready to perform corporal, as well as spiritual works of mercy.
The magnificent stained glass windows, along with the marble altars, statues, baptismal font and ambo came from various, previously consolidated churches in Philadelphia, while our tabernacle was newly made in Spain. During the installation of the marble and porcelain floors, a liturgical painter, provided artistic finishes to the church’s interior ceilings and walls.
~ Architecture ~ The design of our new church reflects a Gothic influence. Pointed arches and tracery windows are characteristic of that style, the origin of which is seen in Asyrian architecture. This became a standard of Islamic design as it lead the eyes of beholders to heaven and God. Because of the Gothic style’s compelling appeal to human emotions, it is found in great churches, cathedrals and civic buildings throughout the world.
~ Stain Glass Windows ~ The stain glass windows, depicting the Crucifixion, Nativity, Ascension and the Baptism of our Lord, came from St. Aloysius’ Parish in the Gray's Ferry section of Philadelphia. These windows were created in Bavaria and shipped across the Atlantic Ocean to Philadelphia. They were designed and made by the F.S. Zettler Studio in Munich, which was established in the 1870’s. They were commissioned in 1924, as the Gothic Revival style was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The color of the glass is not painted on, but rather, comes from the rich palette of hand-blown glasses. The glass blowing process for sheet glass is the identical method for blowing a vase bottle. The figures or scenes are then painted or drawn on the colored glass sheets.
~ Altars and Statues ~ Our altars came from St. Clement Church in West Philadelphia, which was built in 1865. They are made of marble from the Carrera region in Italy, as were most of the altars in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in the mid-1800's. The main altar has an elaborate depiction of the Last Supper carved into its front section. The two marble side altars were modified to serve as individual pedestals for our marble statues. A statue of the Blessed Mother and Child and that of St. Joseph are located at the Nativity stain glass window, while a statue of the Sacred Heart and that of St. Anthony of Padua are at the Ascension stain glass window. The Sacred Heart, Blessed Mother and St. Joseph statues are from St. Clement Church, while that of St. Anthony is from St. Aloysius Church. The Baptismal font and ambo, which have been restored for our new church, were also from St. Aloysius.
~ Chandeliers ~ Our chandeliers, manufactured in Spain by Crystal, were chosen for their old-world look that blends with the antique altars and statuary in the Church. Eight chandeliers, made with bronze patina and hand-cut alabaster shades, hang in the main body of the church. In addition to the main chandeliers, alabaster and bronze antique lights, dating from 1870, hang over each of the four marble statues mentioned above. These four lights came from St. Agatha Church in Philadelphia.

April 12, 2008 -- Dedication of our new church with Cardinal Rigali
HOW LOVELY IS YOUR DWELLING PLACE, O LORD, MY GOD! Psalm 84 We welcome all to worship and pray with us in our new church. Daily Mass will be in the chapel at 8:45 AM Monday through Friday and 8:30 AM on Saturday. Perpetual Adoration will be Monday through Friday from 9 AM – 9 PM. Please remember our new mass schedule will begin on Sunday April 13th with masses at 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM and 5:30 PM on Saturdays.
PRAISE THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, OUR LIFE AND LOVE As we celebrate the Mass of Dedication for our new church in our Bicentennial Year, we rejoice as Cardinal Rigali, his fellow bishops, and brother priests, bless our new church and parish offices for the glory of God and good of our community. I recall the words of Saint Paul to the Philippians: “I give thanks to God every time I think of you, praying always with joy in every prayer for all of you because of your partnership for the gospel from the first day until now.” (Phil 1:3-5) The Word of God records that Jesus delivered Mary Magdalen from seven demons and transformed her into a zealous disciple and evangelist of mercy and compassion. May all who pray in this church experience the same awe and wonder of our Blessed Mother when she conceived the Word made Flesh and of Mary Magdalen when she encountered our Risen Lord. May the saints console and challenge us, to become what we receive each time we receive our precious Lord and participate in perpetual adoration. Since our church and parish offices are in the same building, it will remind us that true worship leads to an increase of divine mercy and charity. I praise God and thank all of you who continue to grow as faithful disciples and generous stewards of your time, talents and treasure. I am especially grateful to all who willingly served as visionaries, architects, designers, engineers, builders, fundraisers, and prayer warriors to Build God’s House in our Time. Our greatest challenge as friends of Jesus remains the same for all of us: to sustain the faith commitment, active participation and personal openness to one another which have marked the community of Saint Mary Magdalen since its humble beginning in a barn in 1963. Please join us faithfully at Mass so that together through word and sacrament, we can build a family of faith in Jesus Christ through Catholic worship, education, and charity. Our Risen Lord grant you peace and serenity, Fr. Ralph
PRAYER TO ST. MARY MAGDALEN Dear St. Mary Magdalen, through your friendship with our Lord, Jesus Christ, you were delivered from the seven demons of pride, anger, lust, greed, envy, gluttony, and sloth.Through the grace and guidance of the Holy Spirit renew within us the sevenfold gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, counsel, courage, piety, and fear of the Lord, so that like you, we too can announce the good news of our Risen Lord by a life of virtue. Amen
To pray for God’s blessings we placed a time capsule with all your names and benefactors inside the altar and these first class relics of the saints: St. Jude Thaddeus, St. Thomas Aquinas, St. John Neumann, St. Therese of Lisieux, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, St. Francis of Assisi, St. Rita, St. Pius X, St. Clare, St. Pio.
LET US REJOICE IN GOD’S HOME Enjoy awe and wonder as the Crucifixion, Nativity, and Ascension stained glass windows radiate the power and peace of God’s love. The liturgical painting adds splendor and a touch of heaven blessing us with serenity. The marble and porcelain floors help us stand firm in the permanent commitment of Jesus for our salvation. The statues of the Sacred Heart, Blessed Mother and Child, St. Joseph and St. Anthony remind us that we are destined to be saints. Our magnificent tabernacle calls us to make our Eucharistic Lord, the center of our hearts and homes. The chandeliers welcome us into the Light of Christ so that we too can be candles of hope.

We are most grateful to Cardinal Justin Rigali, Bishops Louis DeSimone, Bishop Robert Maginnis, Bishop Joseph Cistone, our Vicar Msgr. John Breslin, Msgr. Richard Skelly, Rev. Robert Vogan, and all my brother priests and deacons who graced us for the dedication.

September 3, 2007 Church Topping Ceremony - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2007 AT 11 AM Praise God and thank you for your generous gifts of time, talent, and treasure as our new church and parish offices are on schedule to be completed this February 2008. We invite all of our dear parishioners and friends of St. Mary Magdalen who have helped us build our foundations of faith, complete our steel structure of hope, and frame out our sanctuary and offices of love to our Topping Ceremony.
The final piece of signed structural steel will be put into place on Friday September 7th at 11:00AM. This piece of steel on top of our bell tower will hold the Cross which hung on the steeple of our former church. The Cross depicts the twelve apostles dancing around the empty cross reminding all that Jesus Christ has conquered sin and death, is risen, and offers us new life and love. An evergreen plant will also be attached to the steel girder as a symbol of the eternal love of God and the peace and harmony Jesus brings to all who labor for the glory of God and the good of others.
All are welcome to be a part of this historical moment where we will celebrate the gift of Jesus gracing and guiding us to live as a people of faith, hope, and love. CH&E Construction Builders have several treats for our children. We extend an invitation to our community and civil leaders who have been instrumental in BUILDING GOD’S HOUSE IN OUR TIME.
We ask you to park in the schoolyard and gather for the ceremony in the new parking lot in front of the construction site
For further information, contact our rectory or Fr. Ralph J. Chieffo at 610-566-8821. We hope you can join us for this blessing and topping ceremony that will begin at 11 AM and conclude by 11:30 AM.
August 26, 2007 CHURCH CONSTRUCTION UPDATE Foundations and foundation walls are complete. 75% of the floor has been poured. Lower level steel has been erected. Storm sewer retention basins are nearly complete. Upper level structural steel is being erected (soon the building will look like a church.) In the next few weeks, studs for interior basement walls will be erected along with electrical work that permit drywall to be installed. Exterior basement walls and windows will be started. Within the next 4 – 6 weeks, upper-level concrete floors will be poured and the building roof should be in place.
Topping Ceremony - The final piece of structural steel to be installed has been placed in front of the school gymnasium. We invite all parishioners, within the next two weeks, to sign it and have their names as a permanent part of Saint Mary Magdalen church. A date and time for the installation of this steel beam will be provided.
February 4, 2007 BACK IN SCHOOL FOR MASS Some of our parishioners reminisced worshipping in our four classroom school until 1970. We remind you that Mass on Monday through Friday will be at 8:45 AM and on Saturday at 8:30 PM. Weekend Masses will be in our parish center-gym. The doors to our school will be locked so you can enter into the chapel from the rear parking lot. On weekends, the front of the school will be handicap parking for our seniors and they can enter through the front doors of the gym. Confessions will be on Saturdays from 8 AM before the 8:30 AM Mass and from 4 PM- 4:30 PM in the room next to the gym.
Adoration will begin this week from 9:30 AM – 4 PM on Mondays through Fridays. Adoration will be extended until 9PM as soon as we hire someone to secure the entrance. Adorers must register in the Principal’s Office during school hours. We encourage all adorers to continue praying their scheduled times at Nativity Church in Media or Sts Simon and Jude Parish, Westtown.
We ask everyone to be vigilant and all school doors will remain locked at all times. Do not let anyone in unless they have a Visitors Badge from the School Office. Two parking places will be reserved in front of the main doors to the school for the Adorers. Our Youth Room will be used for all meetings now scheduled in St. Katharine Drexel Room.
January 28, 2007 Good News! The PA Department of Environment has approved our plan for our new church and parish offices. In anticipation of receiving a building permit from the Township soon, we may be closing our church to remove all of our valuable religious articles on February 5th. St. Katharine Drexel Room will be renovated into our Daily Chapel the week of January 29th so that we can begin celebrating daily Mass in school on Monday, February 5th. Mass on Monday through Saturday will be at 8:45 AM.

December 10, 2006 We are grateful to the Upper Providence Township for approving the Septic Plan to build our church. They are still completing the documents for the PA Dept of Environment to review and approve our plan for a permanent solution for our septic system for our church, school, gym, and rectory, before building our new facilities.
Due to the delays, our construction costs have increased from $7.05 million to $7.4 million. Because of PA Department of Environment and Upper Providence regulations mandate that we have a plan to tie into public sewers in the near future, we had to agree to place into escrow $500,000.00 over the next five years. The local sewage officer ruled that due to increased usage of our septic system by our school and gym facilities (560,000 gallons a year compared to 40,000 by our church), our present system is not sufficient.
Cardinal Rigali and Bishop Cistone reviewed again our plans this week and commended the building committee and interior design committee for our plans to build a more traditional church using the religious treasures of other churches. The Archdiocese Finance Office and our parish finance Committee support the fact that we can financially handle these increased costs thanks to your continued generosity in the Building Campaign and church donations. Please pray for us as we anticipate approval soon. We encourage past parishioners to celebrate the blessings of our present church during this Advent Season of Hope and love.
Until we have a building permit, we can not determine when we will be moving into the parish center for Mass on Saturday evening and Sundays and the daily Masses will be in St. Katharine Drexel Room. Stay tuned to the bulletin or website.
May 28, 2006 The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has delayed our project until further testing is performed on our present septic system. Our building committee, architect, and engineer are doing everything possible to rectify this matter. We need your prayers and the grace to motivate the PA DEP to grant permission. We cannot establish a date to close the church until all is in order.
April 9, 2006 We are all in the building business as we try to provide the best physical and spiritual facility for our family and parish. Jesus commands us to build our spiritual home on solid rock rather than sand. So please add you faith and family spirit as we build with the Spirit of Jesus our new facility to serve the growing parish family.
Our Building Committee, architect and Archdiocese has chosen Caldwell, Heckles, and Egan, Inc. (CH& E) as our contractor to Build God’s House in our Time and our parish offices at $7,050,00.00. The other bidders were much higher. They have recently built St. Patrick Church, Malvern and St. Helena Church, Center Square. We are presently negotiating a final contract with them and the legal department of the Archdiocese which approves the contract before the Pastor and Cardinal sign it. We cannot establish a date to close the church until all is in order.

The parish family and I are most grateful to the 537 families who have pledged their financial support for building a larger facility for our growing parish family. We appreciate the prayers and encouragement of all the parishioners as we proceed to negotiate a contract with a general contractor and attain a building permit from Upper Providence Township. We invite all to help us BUILD GOD’S HOUSE IN OUR TIME. You can use the monthly envelope marked Building Fund to pledge your prayers and support. Help us pass on our faith to the next generation as our parents passed on their faith.
