#4 The Prophets
The
Prophets were those heroes of the old Testament who made God's revelation
clearer and clearer, who tongue lashed the Jewish people for their infidelity
to Yahweh's covenant, and who frequently paid for their service to God's
people by martyrdom at their hands. In this window, we
picture the four "major" prophets. Isaiah
holds a saw, the instrument of his death. Jeremiah
is pictured holding an oversized quill, a tribute to his literary ability; a
twisted red collar about his neck recalls the words of his lamentation
referring to the yoke of sin about his neck. Ezechial
holds a wheel of fire in his hand, reminiscent of his first vision in which
the wheel supports and gives incalculable movement to God's throne. The
fourth prophet, Daniel, appears near the bottom of the window holding a rock
in his hand. The rock refers to his allegory of the Messianic age:
the rock untouched by the hand that crushed the great statue.
