Friday of the Second Week in Ordinary Time
Memorial Feast: Saint Agnes (291-+304)—Virgin and Martyr, Patroness of the Children of Mary
1 Samuel 24:3-21, Psalm 57:2-4, 6, 11, & Mark 3:13-19
In a few short verses, I love how Saint Mark conveys to us one of the essential parts of our Lord's public ministry. Jesus goes up the mountain and summons His disciples. When they had gathered together, He appointed 'The Twelve' and called them Apostles. Jesus calls these particular disciples to follow Him in an extraordinary way. He sent them forth to preach the 'Good News' and gave them the authority to drive our demons—Incredible!
As Catholic Christians, we, too, are commissioned to be Jesus' disciples, and we are to conduct His mission now. Our Lord wants us to spread His 'Good News' with those around us—our family, friends, and coworkers, as well as strangers we may encounter.
The gift is to spread the 'Good News' with our words, deeds, and with consideration. To love and care for another has the power to drive out demons and unclean spirits. Today, we can share Jesus' message of love, care, and compassion. When we walk with Jesus, He empowers us to act on His behalf. When we do this, we may give any individual we encounter a great gift; Jesus Himself.
Question of the Day: Are we willing to leave our comfort zone and follow Jesus as one of His new disciples?
Prayer: "God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Alleluia, alleluia."
