Friday of the Sixth Week in Ordinary Time
James 2:14-24, 26, Psalm 112:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, & Mark 8:34-9:1
Today, Saint Mark describes how Jesus summoned a crowd, including His disciples, saying to them, "Anyone who wishes to come after me must deny their very self, take up the cross, and follow in my footsteps." Our Lord then directs a series of questions to them. He hoped His listeners would realize what it means to truly "follow Him." It is no easy route with its many challenges and defeats, but the fruitful, everlasting rewards belong to faithful followers of Christ.
Today, I ask that you take five to ten minutes and earnestly ask yourself, "What are the current challenges in my life as related to my faith and belief in God? Am I a true and faithful follower of Jesus in my daily life? Or, am I merely a "Sunday" follower?" Perhaps along our way, we might discover that we must ask these questions daily on our journey.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know that when my cross is too heavy to carry, You will be at my side, giving me the strength to carry on and follow in your footsteps. Amen.
