Reflections and Perspectives

Welcome! Reflections, Testimonials, and Perspectives for St. Mary Magdalen are offered by our priests, deacons, parishioners, and others as guest writers. We will offer a Sunday Reflection as well as other topics.

We are very grateful to Deacon Anthony Cincotta, who has offered to share his daily reflections with us for the past year and a half. Deacon Anthony is retiring from his writings of daily reflections, and we wish him our love and warm wishes in his new endeavors.

Sixth Day within the Octave of the Nativity of the Lord

1 John 2:12-17, Psalm 96:7-10, & Luke 2:36-40

In today's Gospel narrative, the devout woman, Anna, the prophetess, is given particular attention by Saint Luke. She possesses a remarkable focus and is an excellent example of persistence and hope. She lived her entire life for a single encounter with Jesus, the Messiah. She was taught the law of the prophets, and she was aware of the promised Messiah who would deliver Israel. She knew her God because she spoke with Him each day. She longed to see His coming by living in the temple and fasting.

Her wait lasted until she was eighty-four years old. When Simeon spoke about the Child, Anna recognized Him, and she gave thanks to God because her prayers were answered. There is a message for us in Anna's encounter with Jesus. We are able to encounter God in prayer and through contemplation of His Word. We can share the fruit of these encounters with others to help lead them to God.

Prayer: "A holy day has dawned upon us. Come, you nations, and adore the Lord. Today a great light has come upon the earth. Alleluia, alleluia."
