Thursday after Ash Wednesday

Book of Deuteronomy 30:15-20, Psalm 1:1-2, 3, 4, 6, & Luke 9:22-25

Lent is for religious people. As a part of the prologue to the season, today's scripture reading addresses a religious people, the Israelites of three-thousand plus years ago, and the Christians of today as well. The choice Moses offers is not between religion and atheism, nor between piety and irreverence but between two forms of religion; one that offers life and the other that brings death.

Moses had a hard sell. He begs the Israelites, and all of us, not to choose a form of religion that allows us to be in control but one that trusts in God. The message in today's Gospel narrative is precisely the same. That is, "…whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."

The three short verses of Saint Luke's Gospel are full of meaning for us because we all have crosses to bear. At the beginning of Lent, let us attend to how we treat others, think about them, and judge them. Getting along with others often is one of our chronic crosses. We all have our crosses. How well we bear them is based on how we try to follow Jesus.

Question of the Day: Do you choose a religion that seeks to imitate God in His total self-giving in Jesus?

Prayer: "Blessed are they who hope in the Lord."
